KESC Intelligent Tutoring System (KITS) is developed from a combination of the strengths of several studies by its founders and educators in the field of education. KESC research-based Tutoring Model meets the state and the recommendations of National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) , National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the International Reading Association (IRA).
The model assumes that an ideal (intelligent) student is one that has the knowledge of what he/ she does or does not understand, has the motivation to find the missing information to understand it or the motivation to independently apply what he/she knows to advance knowledge and be proficient. Using a six-step tutorial model to generate interests to learning by breaking success and skills down into simpler components, positive feedback and motivational elements to boost confidence and self-esteem, and repeated practices of the knowledge gained to achieve proficiency, KITS success is measured by the level to which a student reaches proficiency and independence after 45 hours of tutoring.

KITS has the following six process areas.

Becoming an Intelligent Student process presupposes that every student can learn given the appropriate tool and environment. The process focuses on motivating the student to be interested in his/her own learning using a set of 20 research-based strategies to develop the abilities for defining word problems and correct definition of the problem that the student wants to solve or abilities to recognize area of need to be addressed.

Alignment of learning styles to academic performance activities are focused at appropriate ability level to enrich study, quantitative literacy, problem solving, critical, and analytical reasoning skills.

Mutual-Goal Setting process allows the student and tutor to set mutual goal of following appropriate steps to work together to solve the problem at hand. The tutoring goals are:

To help the student recognize his/her learning style and how to maximize its use.
To give every student the necessary learning skills and confidence to succeed on their own.
To continuously help the students learn how to address their own needs, strengthen their weaknesses and improve and make use of their strengths.
To Monitor and improve work habits of good note taking, Consistent homework, and use of resources ( teacher, text, friends, etc)

Knowledge tracing process allows the trained tutor to guide the student to break the problem in steps and guide the “intelligent student” to solve exercises step- by-step. The student must “talk aloud” during the tutoring so that the tutor can hear and better follow and guide the student thinking in the learning process. The tutor must follow each student’s individual solution path, apply one or more of KESC twenty learning strategies to the goal the student selects, and manipulates or guides the student thinking until the student arrives at a correct solution.

.Knowledge Gain Tracing process is used to trace each student’s growing knowledge in the learning process and the ability to extend or generalize the knowledge to other advance problems including assigned classroom homework; Tracing the student’s step-by-step solution enables the tutor to build success from success, to know when the student is ready to advance to the more challenging step and to help the student remain focused and motivated. In tracing the student knowledge, the tutor does not automatically give problem solving advice but instead, the tutor allows the student maximum opportunity to reason through and discover the solution of the current problem state.

Learning Independence process is a practice –makes-perfect strategy in which the student continues applying known knowledge to defining and solving new problems until the student becomes completely independent of the tutor. Improvement gain is measured by performamce gain between pre and post tests, and motivation by the attempts to answer questions or be independent of tutor.

KITS is not a computer software but a tutor directed computer- assisted tutoring (TDCAT) program that enahnces students problem solving ability to help the student reach a mutually agreed goal based on the deep understanding of the student’s leaning style and work habits. KESC tutoring program is aligned with K-12 school curriculum and modeled as collaborative effort between KESC, student/parent and classroom teacher.
