The Tutoring Service Options

The tutoring service Option depends on individual student need and proficiency level as determined by Cognitive Diagnostic Assessment as follows:

Option 1-Remediation: Students are placed into remediation level when the assessment results show proficiency in one or more grade levels below their supposed grade in Reading and Math. For these students to develop basic skills to meet the state standards and the demands of college preparatory work, KESC offers the following intensive support classes for students:

  • College Readiness Skills (CRS) (study, note taking and test-taking skills) developing strategies help the students acquire productive habits of work, time management, reading comprehension and expository writing strategies.
  • Quantitative literacy Skills (QLS) activities include hands-on-mathematics activities and classes that focus on key state standards that students did not aster in middle school in addition to intensive practice in arithmetic accuracy.
  • Critical Verbal Reasoning (CVR). The lack of time for guided practice in reading and writing severely hampers the progress of low-achieving students.  CVR provides the skill building activities to give students the time they need to develop their literacy skills and aptitudes and intensive, personalized remediation in basic skills and comprehension including reading strategies, writing proficiency, vocabulary development, fluency, grammar, phonetics, etc.
  • Fill in Past Gaps (FPG):  KESC offers students additional opportunities to make up gaps in needed skills:
College PrepSummer Bridge is a five-week intensive summer program for incoming 9th graders and helps them prepare for college prep curriculum.
Intersession Math and Reading is a two-week period between the 1st and 2nd nine weeks or semester to give the students opportunity for intensive review in Math and English before tackling new material.

Option 2- Tutoring Support (TS): Students are placed in TS if they test into their appropriate grade level or standard but show some evidence of weakness in some critical areas they need in order to sustain above average performance in the new grade. Teaching and learning strategy of going over the past gaps are uniquely adapted to the individual needs of the child; the tutor facilitates the student’s learning and understanding of homework, projects, and test as assessment tools.  This option helps students recognize their learning styles and how to maximize them in areas in which they are weak.

Option 3- Continuous Support (CS):  In CS, students are placed in appropriate level but show evidence of lack of motivation and focus in reading and math. Activities are interactive and designed to increase the student motivation and critical and analytical reasoning skills in a hands-on-laboratory setting. Continuously academic monitoring is critical in this option. The tutor facilitates the students’ maximum use of their strengths to improve academic performance. Students who fail below a B average in reading, math and science by the end of any nine week is automatically placed in Tutoring support option in the subsequent nine week.

Option 4- Enrichment Acceleration is for gifted and talented students who placed at mastery level (>95%) from the assessment results. These students will benefit from challenge in advanced classes and exploration of their world of possibilities in our Get-a-Head Program. The enrichment acceleration program is highly selective and may require recommendation from school counselor for admission. The program also includes an individualized peer-mentoring component between high-achieving college students and the high school students.
