The Purpose of Tutoring

    1. Tutoring is not teaching but a process of helping a student develop the skills necessary to become an independent learner and develop the skills and the attitudes that lead to success.
    2. While the goal of tutoring is to enhance academic achievement, A tutoring session involves more than just academic concerns.
      • Tutors must be sensitive to the feelings and needs of their tutees since many students come to tutoring with feelings of defeat, frustration, and apprehension about their ability to succeed.
      • A tutor can take on some of the functions of a counselor and friend by reassuring tutees, empathizing with their feelings, and praising their efforts.
    3. A tutor while working with a student in a particular subject area, must
      •  maintain contact with the classroom instructor, parent and Center tutorial supervisor,
      • Report on student progress, and
      • Become familiar with the proper expectations for each tutee.
