AAP - Math AP Honors

Academic Acceleration Program (AAP) primary goal is to support 9th to 12th grade gifted students to excel in their most challenging high school math and science classes and complete their math and science graduation requirements before 11th grade so they can take college-level classes in their junior and senior years. Such students are more likely to be admitted into national selective universities with competitive scholarship packages and have the highest probability of success in medical or STEM careers. With structured mentoring and Career Path Discovery program along with parent involvement program integrated into the support services, students enrolled in AAP classes will have the needed competitive advantage and academic portfolio.

Honors Algebra II Problem Solving (AAP 301 HA)

The purpose of this course is to teach problem solving strategies and techniques related to Algebra II and prepare the students to take SAT II Mathematics Level 1 exam or participate in math competition. This course will fill in the gaps and add depth to students who have just completed Algebra II and solid problem solving foundation for Honors Pre-calculus.
Problem solving topics include:
  • Algebra II (45%): Linear equations, quadratic equations, radical equations, inequalities, absolute value, equations of lines and circles, graphing functions, transformation (shift, stretch, symmetry and reflection), long division, synthetic division, the remainder theorem, the factor theorem, the rational roots theorem, zeroes of polynomial functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, systems of equations, parabolas, ellipses, and hyperbolas;
  • Art of Problem Solving (40%): Exponents and logarithms, complex numbers, linear equations, proportions, divisibility, number bases, modular arithmetic, primes, quadratic equations, angles, triangles, quadrilaterals, polygons, angle chasing, areas, the power of coordinates, power of a point, 3-D geometry, inequalities, sequence & series, counting & probabilities, statistics, and sets;
  • Test Skills (15%):These skills will enable you to do well on similar problems found on SAT II Math Level 1 exam and math competitions.

Prerequisite:

EEP 202, 203 or Concurrent Enrollment in Algebra II.

Grades:

9th or 10th Grade honor students

Total Time:

45 Hours (30 meetings at 1.5 hour per meeting)
