Why must we Learn Mathematics?
For most technical fields of education, learning mathematics equips students with a concise and powerful means of communication. It provides the framework and tools for reasoning, justifying conclusions, and expressing ideas clearly. Mathematical education is a gradual, and yet continuous and cohesive throughout the grades to help students develop an understanding of the interrelatedness of concepts that form the framework for learning and applying mathematical concepts.KESC strategic goals for effective mathematics education:
- To give students the correct tools and opportunities to learn independently based on the
belief that all students can learn mathematics more effectively when given the correct tools - Recognize that all students learn mathematics in different ways and using different resources,
- Is based on deep understanding of students’ learning styles and sets of expectations
- To challenge all students to think critically, quantitatively and analytically
- To help students maximize their strengths and build the solid conceptual foundation in mathematics.
- To give the student lifelong learning tool, interest and preparation in college mathematics education.
Seven mathematical processes integrated into KESC Tutoring Goals:
- Problem solving,
- Reasoning and proving,
- Reflecting,
- Selecting tools and computational strategies,
- Connecting,
- Representing, and
- Communicating.
Our shared Roles and Responsibilities in Mathematics Education
- Student Responsibilities
- Must take direct responsibilities with regard to their learning
- Must be willing to make the effort required and discover the direct relationship between this effort and achievement in mathematics.
- Must take responsibility for their own progress and learning
- Must be fully committed to their learning with appropriate degree of work and study.
- Must be willing to engage in learning activities and to reflect on their experiences.
- Must learn and apply strategies and processes that promote understanding of concepts and facilitate the application of important skills.
- Must pursue opportunities outside the classroom to extend and enrich their understanding of mathematics.
- Parents Responsibilities
- Must play the role of supporting their child’s learning.
- Must be fully involved in their child’s education since studies show that students
- perform better in school if their parents or guardians are involved.
- Must be become familiar with the curriculum and academic plan in each grade and what their child is expected to learn.
- Must have knowledge of the expectations in the various grades to be able to interpret their child’s report card, reinforce the expectations, and to work with teachers to improve their child’s learning.
- Must attend parent-teacher interviews, participating in parent workshops and school council activities and encouraging students to complete their assignments at home.
- KESC Tutors Responsibilities
- Must use appropriate instructional strategies to help students achieve the State and School curriculum expectations,
- Must support students in developing the reading, writing, and oral communication skills needed for success in learning mathematics.
- Recognize that students need a solid conceptual foundation in mathematics in order to further develop and apply their knowledge effectively,
- Must endeavor to create a classroom environment that engages students’ interest and understanding of mathematics
- Must provide numerous opportunities for students to develop their ability to solve problems, reason mathematically, and connect the mathematics knowledge to the real world around them to become lifelong learners.
- Use George Polya’s Four-Step Problem-Solving Model to provides students a process to internalize mathematical thinking about a question before, during, and after the problem-solving experience
