All of Kanmas middle school & junior high English language art, reading and writing tutoring programs are aligned with the State standard and follow the standards and recommendations by the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the International Reading Association (IRA). The primary objectives of Kanmas English Tutoring program are to help all students: - Build an understanding of classroom assigned texts and how to acquire new information
- Be able to apply a wide range of strategies (including prior experience, knowledge of word meaning and of other texts, word identification strategies, and their understanding of textual features) to comprehend, interpret, evaluate, and appreciate classroom and other assigned texts.
- Be able to employ a wide range of strategies as they write and use different writing process elements appropriately to communicate with different audiences for a variety of purposes.
- Acquire and be able to apply knowledge of language structure, language conventions (e.g., spelling and punctuation), and genre to create, critique, and discuss print and non-print texts.
- Use a variety of technological and information resources (e.g., print and non-print texts, people, libraries, databases, computer, video) to gather and synthesize information and to create and communicate knowledge to others.
- Whose first language is not English learn to make use of their first language to develop competency in the English language arts and to develop understanding of content across the curriculum.
KESC uses in-house and state approved assessment tools to determine the student's competency in reading and writing, the impact of instruction and its tutoring strategies on the student’s learning, and continuous academic competency leve in English language arts.
